Talad Rom Hub, beter known as the Maeklong Railway Market, in Samut Songkhram is a market made famous by the train that runs through it four times a day. But he name of the markt isn't derived by the train. Talad Rom Hub means folding umbrella in Thaim which you can see the vendors do when the train approaches. The market itself isn’t that exciting unless you’re planning to buy fresh fish, vegetables, meat or spices. What is exciting, however, is to go there by train from Bangkok. This trip is much cheaper and much more fun than a daytrip from Bangkok by bus or minivan. Travelling by train through Thailand is a wonderful way to really see, hear, feel and smell the country.

How to get there:

In Bangkok, you need to take the train from Wongwian Yai (BTS Wongwian Yai exit 3, or take a taxi) to Mahachai. This train will cost you 10 baht. From there you take the ferry (2 baht) from the Mahachai Pier to Tha Chalom and walk to Ban Laem Station (about 10 minutes). At Ban Laem you take the the train to Maeklong. This is the train that will go through the market and will cost you 10 Baht too. If you wan’t to see the train go through the markt, you have to wait an hour (see below).

Here you can find the time tables of trains I took (September 2018):
Train 1: Wongwian Yai - Mahachai: 10:40 am - 11:39 am;
Train 2: Ban Laem - Maeklong: 1:30 pm - 2:30 pm.

Train 2 will depart Maeklong Station at 3:30 pm and ride through the market back to Ban Laem. If you’re not on that train you can take a minibus (90 Baht) back to Sai Tai Mai (southern bus terminal) of Mo Chit BTS.
