While driving around Road 1 on Iceland I stopped by the Námafjall, Hverir geothermal area. The area is easily accessible by car with a parking lot right next to the mud pots.
You can walk around the area and inspect the mud pots and hissing holes. But beware! You need sturdy walking shoes and be ready to sink into acidic mud. Your shoes will get ruined if you don’t take care.
The area is quite interesting, especially in the morning before all the tourists arrive in their big busses.
